== Recovery Mode ==
Apeman42 from XDA Developers found [http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=812601 Recovery Menu]

#Have everything plugged into the unit except the power coord. Have the power coord in your hand.
#Press and hold the power button and plug the unit in.
#Continue to hold down the power button for 3 seconds after plugging it in, then release the power button.
#Wait a couple of seconds and it will say Sony, then you will see the recovery screen.
#After it loads, press and hold the connect button on the unit. Then follow the directions at the bottom of the screen (Press and hold ALT+ENTER) for 8 seconds/until the bottom message changes. It will change back to it saying that you have to press the CONNECT button, but your remote IS connected.
#You can now press the numbers assigned to the commands!

== Serial Console ==
The Sony NSX series TVs have an easy-open debug port on the back:

[[File:Nsxgtvport.jpg]]

Presumably the beige connector is for a custom ribbon cable. The row of four solder pads below it is the UART for ttyS0: GND, RX, TX, 3.3V. If you listen to the TX port while the TV boots up, you'll get a dmesg dump:https://pastee.org/v2ytp . This port echoes characters (if hardware flow control is off) but seems to totally ignore all incoming characters.

Listening to the UART while going through the recovery mode menu items yields lots of juicy logs: https://pastee.org/ra8np [[nsx-40gt1 uart log]]

On the ribbon cable connector, number the pins from 1 on the (lower) left side to 18 on the (upper) right side.

# GND
# ?
# 3.3V (connected to the 4th solder pad)
# N/C
# (connected to the 4th solder pad)
# N/C (Though it is routed to a via)
# ? (normally high, but low during a reset)
# GND
# TX1 (Connected to 3rd solder pad)
# RX1 (Connected to 2nd solder pad)
# N/C
# ? (normally high, but low during a reset)
# ?
# (connected to the 4th solder pad)
# RESET
# ? (high)
# TX2 (bootloader output, 115200/8N1)
# GND

== USB Update ==
The steps to access recovery mode are listed in the "Recovery Menu" section at the top of this page. Also, a list of OTA sony downloads can be found [http://gtvhacker.com/index.php/Sony_Update_Downloads#Download_Links Here]

In recovery mode, any USB storage device will be automounted when inserted. If it's inserted at the start of recovery mode, the device will attempt to do a USB update. This executes the following:
<pre>
cmd:ls /tmp/mnt/diskb1/package_list_*.zip | head -1 | grep "package_list_"
cmd:/bin/sony/check_version.sh /tmp/mnt/diskb1/package_list_0.zip
</pre>

For a USB update to succeed, the following are necessary (but not sufficient):
# there must be a file matching /package_list_*.zip or else you get the error "find package error: no such a package !"
# the zip must contain a file "system/build.prop" or else you get the error "caution: filename not matched: system/build.prop"
# the zip must contain a file matching "package_list_*.txt" or else you get the error "caution: filename not matched: package_list_*.txt"
# The system/build.prop must have an ro.build.id that is greater than the current values. Otherwise you get an onscreen message saying "USB data is old".
# At '''this''' point, the signature is checked:
<pre>
package update start !
cmd:/package_update.sh -y -l 0 -p /tmp/mnt/diskb1/package_list_ogm_2.1_2011_asu1
(*) Direct/Interface: Loaded 'PNG' implementation of 'IDirectFBImageProvider'.
</pre>

If a valid-looking zipfile on a USB storage device is plugged in when the system goes through a normal boot, it will abort and reboot into the recovery mode.

==Make CBS, hulu, etc work==
You will need to change your useragent in Chrome.
* Bring up the browser menu, then go to “more”, and then “settings”. From there go to “advanced” and then “mode”, and finally change the user agent. (Thanks to [http://www.gtvhub.com/2010/11/11/user-agent-fix-unblocks-fox-on-google-tv-for-now/ GTVHub].)
* Once there, you have two choices
** Copy or type in a useragent. It's best to use a real one; you can find one by going to http://whatsmyuseragent.com/ from a normal computer. Going there on your GTV will show the current user agent on the device.
** An alternative is to use the "Generic" user agent, instead of typing in a custom one. As of 3/5/2012, Hulu can be accessed when using the "Generic" user agent in combination with the GTVHacker root.
In 3.2 Sony removed the ability to install apps from non-marketplace sources. You can still install via ADB, but not via dropbox, chrome etc.

To fix, on a rooted box, connect via adb, and fire up a shell (adb shell), then:

<pre>
/bin/busybox sh
/bin/busybox sed -ir "s/(install_non_market_apps0)/(install_non_market_apps1)/" /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db
reboot
</pre>
Done, you can now install apps from chrome, dropbox, etc!

'''How this works'''
----
The first exploit we found was a great one which allowed full access inside recovery. This allowed us to mount everything RW, and replace just about everything at will. However after the Honeycomb (3.1) release it was patched by Sony.
So, we started looking for another exploit. Long story short, we did not find a new exploit on par with the previous exploit, so we opted for a downgrade!

'''Downgrade'''
----
To start, you need a little bit of background on the system. The system is initialized and calls the bootloader from nand. This is Intel's "Secure Boot" with RSA signatures, encryption, and all that jazz.
The bootloader then calls a signed and/or encrypted (depends) kernel. We can't attack that without a boatload of work. So, we looked into the current recovery version.
This recovery, when you initialize a USB update will do the following:
:Verify a "package_list_*.zip" exists on USB Memory
:If so, it will then extract package_list_*.txt and system/build.prop
:Then, it checks the:
::*ro.product.device
::*ro.build.date.utc
::*ro.build.id
:If, ro.build.date.utc is not equal to, or newer than the current version - the update errors out
:If, ro.build.date.device is not for, the device - the update errors out
Assuming these checks are satisfied, the system will prompt if the user would like to continue the update, and if so the system will then copy the update to the internal partition and verify it, then continue on with the upgrade.

This, is what we used to get a downgrade.
We use 3 USB sticks, labeled 1, 2, 3.
:Stick 1 - A modified update file, containing a build.prop with "ro.build.date.utc" set to the future.
:Stick 2 - A file system node, pointed to /dev/Glob_Spectraa2 (this is important later)
:Stick 3 - A modified image of /dev/Glob_Spectraa3
We use stick 1 to satisfy the device/utc/id checks. Upon prompt, stick 2 is swapped in. This will copy our file system node to the system. It will then error.
Next, we re-use stick 1, to re-satisfy the checks. Upon prompt, stick 3 is swapped in. Since they share the same file name, cp will copy our image into our file system node, which is /dev/Glob_Spectraa2.
It will, after a few moments error. This means that cp copied our image over.
Now, /dev/Glob_Spectraa2 holds the encrypted bootloader, along with recovery kernel and initrd (encrypted). By using the cp, we are able to replace it with the older, exploitable version.

'''Exploit'''
----
Upon power-on, you will be greeted with a new splash, and enter the old recovery. This is where the magic happens!
This exploit was found somewhat oddly. Specifically, the command is issued as follows:
:<code>ls /tmp/mnt/diskb1/package_list_*.zip | head -1 | grep package_list_ </code>
The results of this command are then passed onto a shell script in-line. On this version there is no stripping of special characters etc. So...
:<code>./package-updater.sh -l 0 -p /tmp/mnt/diskb1/package_list_somefile.zip </code>
Therefore, if we specially craft a file we will be able to alter that command specifically using this:
:<code>package_list_;cd /tmp;cd /mnt;cd /diskb1;sh t.sh;.zip </code>
We do have some restrictions (like full paths, among other things) so we use that series of cd's to get to our usb drive, and execute "t.sh".
:<code>./package-updater.sh -l 0 -p /tmp/mnt/diskb1/package_list_;cd /tmp;cd /mnt;cd /diskb1;sh t.sh;.zip </code>
Now, we could have it run a real program - but scripts are just so much more convenient in this case.

'''The Goodies'''
----
This, is all great - the exploit allows RW access to any spot on the system. However, the kernel is still limiting. Specifically - the normal kernel keeps system RO, as well as /. This is annoying of course.
So we quested to get an unsigned kernel running too. Noting back to above, going after it via the bootloader would have been quite difficult, and taken too long so we opted for a reloader.
For anyone who recalls, there are not too many out of the box solutions for reloading a kernel, at least not without having support in the kernel first.

After some thinking we decided to port kexec over to a module and then include it at boot.
It took a little work, but it paid off. We ported over kexec.
Once kexec was in we then compiled our own kernel based off of Sony's provided source code. I will commend Sony, because with a little work - it compiled, they did not forget anything (kernel wise).
This was fabulous, we had our own kernel reloading and then re-initializing the hardware. We did run into some issues with timing though. Specifically, the new kernel needs to reload before the old one has a chance to do anything.
We've also removed the OTACerts for the update process, so you won't be receiving any automatic updates from Sony. Also each install will have a modified flash plugin to allow users to bypass content provider restrictions (hulu, cbs, etc.)

'''Boot Process'''
----
Upon boot, once the init scripts are called we hijack the boot process, insert our kexec modules, mount our new partition "sda8" and load kexec. This all happens in about 1 second (not lying!).
Kernel is rebooted, loads in our kernel, and boots off "sda8." This is a mirror of "sda1" (boot) but has some modifications:

:*no initd hash
:*no signed init.rc
:*no signed init.(eagle/asura).rc
:*does not load kexec (nasty boot loop that would be - it's happened)
:*modified init.rc
:*modified init.(eagle/asura).rc
:*modified default.prop

Our modifications are few - but for default.prop:
:*ro.secure=0
:*ro.debuggable=1

Furthermore, init scripts are modified for RW to / , and to /system. Also, the kernel is modified for RW to /.

'''Final Thoughts / Wishlist'''
----
The Sony boxes have had our attention, on and off for the past 7 months or so, with most of the work happening in short bursts, over approximately one month of combined work time.

As I'd like to point out - this was no simple root and go, it took a lot of work. It saddens me when people (I'm looking at you, tech-blogs) get over-excited over a root for a device, when it's a simple adb push job.
Then the more complex work - be it finding exploits in the kernel, the system itself, etc which gain higher privileges go unannounced.
Just remember the next time you read about a "root", there is usually more that goes into it, much more. Commend the developers who spend their own time and money to get it done. It's more than just what the software can do, think of the initial hack.
However, a few things we'd love to see, but did not have time to do - if you want to help out, let us know:
:Ad block for chrome, should be totally possible - and would improve the system browsing speed considerably
----
The methods we use are completely reversible by entering the recovery menu and performing a USB update as described on the GTVHacker wiki page for each device. Below is a link to a more detailed guide on how the recovery downgrade and loading of the new jail broken kernel works.
'''Warnings'''
----
* This will definitely void your warranty with Sony, if you want to keep your warranty please do not do any of the steps in this guide.
* This will wipe your data partition removing all apps, personal settings and resetting the GTV to factory settings.
* This may brick your GTV. It shouldn't, but it still might!
* '''You must be at the most recent 3.2 OTA (Over The Air) before proceeding!'''

'''Tools Needed'''
----
* 4 (512MB+) USB drives total
* Sony NSZ-GT1 (Eagle) or Sony 24",32",40",46" GoogleTV (Asura)

'''Windows Pre-setup'''
----
# Label 4 thumb drives with the numbers 1 2 3 and 4.
# Open the a Windows command prompt (Windows key+R) or Start->Run->cmd then press enter.
# Navigate to the directory that the files in this archive are placed. (A small tutorial can be found at [http://www.sophos.com/support/knowledgebase/article/13195.html Tutorial])
# Rename the USB1-Asura.img or USB1-Eagle.img file depending on which device you have (Eagle = Blu-ray Player & Asura = Sony GoogleTV Panel) to USB1.img.
# Navigate into the Tools/ directory.
# Plug USB drive #1 in and then enter the following command into the command line:
#:<code>	dd.exe --list</code>
# Find the matching volume information for the inserted USB drive. This can be done easiest by matching the drive letter for the USB drive in "My Computer" to the corresponding "\\.\e:" (assuming the drive letter is e:). The format of the list should have the same syntax as the following:
#:<code>\\.\Volume{046ee4df-3db8-11e1-836e-000c29b70b00}\
#: link to \\?\Device\Harddisk1\DP(1)0-0+11
#: removeable media
#: Mounted on \\.\e:</code>
# Using the above example the information we are looking for is the top line "\\.\Volume{046ee4df-3db8-11e1-836e-000c29b70b00}\", we will want to remove the ending backslash and enter it into the following command syntax:
#:<code>Syntax:	dd if=USB#.img of=<volumeinfofromabove> bs=4096
#:	Eagle Example: dd if=../USB1.img of=\\.\Volume{046ee4df-3db8-11e1-836e-000c29b70b00} bs=4096
# A successful completion would look as follows:
#:<code>rawwrite dd for windows version 0.5.
During the install process the onboard SSD is modified and a new partition is added, sda8.

sda8 stores our new /boot. Our old boot is on sda1.

On startup, sda1 mounts sda8 and calls "reboot/reboot.sh" to kickstart the kernel reloading.

Reboot.sh contains:

/bin/busybox insmod /system/reboot/modules/x86_kexec.ko
/bin/busybox insmod /system/reboot/modules/kexec.ko
exec /system/reboot/kexec -f /system/reboot/bzImage --command-line="root=/dev/sda8 console=ttyS0,115200"

The first two lines insert our new modules to call kexec. The sony kernel was not built to support kexec, so we had to add it in.
The last line calls kexec, and forces it to load our image, "bzImage" from reboot/ on sda8.

Our new kernel is mostly stock, based off the released Sony code [[http://www.sony.net/Products/Linux/TV/NSZ-GT1.html here]] (todo: setup code repository), with one modification. It is modified to allow / to be mounted RW.

== Add NTFS support on Sony GTV - BETA! ==

Quick and dirty, but it works. Improve on it and let us know!

Of course, this only works on a "Rebooted" (rooted) box

Get these files from a Logitech Revue:

*/usr/local/bin/ntfs-3g
*/usr/local/bin/ntfs-3g.probe
*/usr/local/lib/libntfs-3g.a
*/usr/local/lib/libntfs-3g.so
*/usr/local/lib/libntfs-3g.so.38.0.0
*/usr/local/lib/libntfs-3g.la
*/usr/local/lib/libntfs-3g.so.38
*/system/bin/vold

You could compile it yourself, a few of those are just symlinks, but again, quick and dirty!

Quick way of doing it:

Copy above files to the Sony GTV via adb in the same spots, overwrite vold.

Pull /etc/vold.conf, alter the media_mount line to look like this (if someone wants to fix it, go ahead, with the original line it mounts too much)

media_mount usb /mnt/media/usb 5 /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:01.0/0000:01:0d.0/usb1/1-1/1-1.1

Push back, reboot - enjoy NTFS!
